February Fun in Alger Heights!

Are the long, cold days of winter getting to you yet? With five full weeks left to go before the calendar officially changes over to spring, it’s easy to feel a bit worn down by this point in the season. But for Alger Heights residents, the month of February will be full of FUN thanks to a variety of community events and neighborhood activities taking place to help you get to know each other, give back to the community, or just have some plain ol’ good fun Check out what’s going on all around you:

SATURDAY, FEB 16: Open Skate at Woodland Skating Center (1:00 – 4:00 PM) – All Alger Heights residents (including non-neighborhood friends and family) are invited to take advantage of a special group discount rate of just $4/person plus free skate rental (children ages 3 and under are free) this Saturday afternoon at Woodland Skating Center. To receive the group discount rate, meet near the door a few minutes before 1:00 PM where an Alger Heights Neighborhood Association board member will be ready to greet you! (Late arrivals may simply mention the Alger Heights Neighborhood Association to get the special rate.) Strollers and wheelchairs are welcome!

TUESDAY, FEB 19: Alger Heights Blood Drive (3:00 – 7:00 PM) – The good folks at Michigan Blood will be hosting a neighborhood blood drive at Alger Park Church. If you would like to be a donor, please sign up online at the Michigan Blood website. Donating blood is a simple act of support that can potentially save the life of someone in need!

SATURADAY, FEB 23: Dash Down Division 5K (9:30 AM) – This family-friendly 5K Run/Walk is put on by The Salvation Army Kroc Center to support the recreation scholarship fund for local children living at or below the poverty level. Feel the BRRRRRR as you race down Division Ave along the Plaster Creek Trail and Garfield Park and through the surrounding Alger Heights neighborhood. Perks include a T-shirt, goodie bag, Kroc Center Day Pass to be used toward a future visit, plus refreshments, door prizes and awards given by age group. Kids are invited to get involved in the fun, too, with a free miniDASH Kids’ Fun Run. (Childcare available for non-participating children for a $5 charge.) SATURDAY FEB 23: Alger Heights at the Grand Rapids Griffins (7:00 PM) – Get your game face on and get ready to take advantage of special pricing for Alger Heights residents of just $12 for lower bowl tickets (normal fee is $20) at the Grand Rapids Griffins. Tickets can be purchased online – enter promo code ALGER. Promo NOT valid at the box office. The Alger Heights Neighborhood Association will even be recognized via a scoreboard message during the game!
